The turn of the calendar from April to May means "Free Golf" certificates courtesy of Hicksville-based Golfing Magazine are on their way to players around Long Island. This year's program includes nine Long Island golf courses, seven of which are in Suffolk County, plus free golf around the Northeast and other area perks.
All of the participating courses in the 2015 Free Golf Program are returnees from last year: Tallgrass in Shoreham, Island's End in Greenport, The Woods at Cherry Creek in Riverhead, Poxabogue in Sagaponack, Brentwood Country Club, Glen Cove, Gull Haven in Central Islip, Holbrook Country Club and The Golf Club at Middle Bay in Oceanside. Poxabogue and Gull Haven are nine-hole courses.
Golfing Magazine's annual Free Golf Program certificate entitles holders to one "free" round at each of the above courses. All you pay for on the day of play is a cart fee (and reservation fee, in some instances). The certificate will only be honored at certain times during the week and on Sundays, and availability varies by course. (Specific terms for each course can be viewed at the Golfing Magazine website.) Be sure to double-check all terms and conditions when reserving your round. Tee times must be made in advance. Once that's done, it's great local golf at a steep discount.
Subscriptions also include one year of Golfing Magazine (five issues). As an added bonus, the certificate is valid at more than 50 participating courses in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and upstate New York, so be sure to have your certificate (and clubs) with you when traveling up the Thruway or I-95 this season.
Additional perks in this year's program include digital photos of golf courses around the world courtesy of golf photographer Evan Schiller, as well as a free bucket of balls at Indian Head Golf Park in Kings Park.
Players can subscribe throughout the season for only $49. Certificates are valid until December 31, 2015.
