The tornadoes that touched down in parts of Long Island this past weekend did nothing more than set off loud cell-phone alarms for most local residents, but at least one area golf course is in recovery mode after one of the rare twisters caused extensive tree damage.
Pine Hills Golf and Country Club in Manorville lost around 100 trees — all on the back nine — during Saturday afternoon's storm. The course's recognizable willow that stands over the 15th fairway managed to avoid destruction.
As a result, the back nine will remain closed this week, and could reopen next week "with lots of hard work," said a Pine Hills staffer. The front nine is open, and a special rate is available during cleanup.
Call Pine Hills at (631) 878-7103 for rate information.
