East Hampton Town Board agrees to sell its portion of Poxabogue Golf Course

The Hamptons-area Poxabogue Golf Course will soon be owned entirely by the Town of Southampton, according to reports in Newsday and The East Hampton Press earlier this week.

East Hampton's Town Board voted last week to sell off its portion of the jointly owned golf facility in order to pay off debt from its original purchase and save on interest payments, said Will James of The East Hampton Press.  The two East End towns purchased the course in 2004 to prevent development of the property.

The sale will not impact golfers residing in East Hampton.  For the financial particulars, check out the Will James article in The East Hampton Press and this Newsday overview.

Poxabogue, a nine-hole course in Sagaponack, has made surprisingly big news in recent years for such a little layout.  The course has been tangled in a web of municipal and legal issues for nearly a decade.  Luckily, that hasn't stopped local and vacationing golfers from enjoying the pleasant facility on the north side of Montauk Highway.

Plug "Poxabogue" into the search box on the right for a refresher on the course's previous issues.  It's not all negative — the New York Times featured the "people's golf course" in its "Neighborhood Joint" series this past July.
