Great Rock’s 12th green to be regraded this offseason, will be ready for spring

Thanksgiving and sports go together like turkey and stuffing, but on Long Island, it's not necessarily football that precedes a holiday feast.  Golf, at some area courses, is as much a part of Thanksgiving as pumpkin pie and a Lions home game.

IMG_0947a One hour before its central Suffolk neighbor, Spring Lake, kicks off its own holiday outing, the Mill Pond Golf Course in Medford will tee up its annual Turkey Shootout tournament at 8:00 a.m.  The Shootout's $49 entry fee includes golf, cart, continental breakfast, range balls and the chance to win individual and team prizes.  Format for the Shootout is two-man scramble.  Visit the Mill Pond pro shop or call (631) 732-8249 to register.

Mill Pond is a wide-open, wind-swept, links-style par-70 that measures a pitch short of 6,000 yards from the middle tees.  Its opening hole (formerly #10) was selected to Golfing Magazine's 2009 Dream Golf Club.  For more information on Mill Pond, check out the course flyover.

Golf On Long Island took part in the 2008 Shootout, carded a -1 on a blustery November morning and worked up a big holiday appetite in the process.
