Long Island Dream Club: Harbor Links #6

The winter of 2009-10 has started off as a poor one for golfers.  Temperatures are stuck far below freezing, chilling any desire to bundle up beneath layers of cold-weather golf gear and venture into the Long Island tundra.  Thin patches of snow linger on the ground and render courses unplayable.

December's blizzard delivered the knockout blow to quality course conditions, but some Long Island golfers are still itching to get back on tee, whether or not the ground is frozen solid and flat sections of fairway are transformed into temporary greens.  If you can find a few hours of tolerable weather conditions to suit up and play, many Long Island courses are awaiting your arrival.

Winter
rates have a way of making the cold more bearable.  They also make it easier for beginners
to experience some of the better courses at a great value, without the
intimidation of a big summer crowd or a fast foursome on their tail.

The
following are some of the offseason 18-hole rates at area courses,
which in many cases have already been in place since the fall.  For
full details about rates and course conditions, contact the course pro shops or visit their websites.  Note that these do not represent discounted rates at all courses:

  • Calverton Links:  $35 to walk/$45 to ride during the week; $40/$50 on weekends.  Rates include range balls and lunch before noon on weekdays.  Twilight rates ($10 off) available after 12 p.m.
  • Hamlet Wind Watch:  $40 until noon on Monday, $30 after 2 p.m.; $50 in the morning, $40 after 12 p.m. and $35 after 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; $60/$50/$35 on weekends.
  • Links at Cherry Creek:  $30 to walk/$40 to ride during the week; $40/$50 on weekends.  Nine-hole rates available on Links Course only.

Check back over the next few weeks for offseason rates at other Long Island courses.
